What’s Everyone Taking Next Semester? A Look at Early College Students Schedules
By: Ishita Chopra and Cally Li
Many students are exploring societal issues and historical perspectives through courses such as Ethnic Studies, World History to 1500, and Social Problems. Classes like Health and Social Justice and Women in Literature reflect a growing interest in understanding and addressing inequities in society. Courses such as Introduction to Ethnic Studies and Gender, Sexual Identity, and Communication provide a lens to examine diversity and inclusion, fostering important discussions in today’s world.
STEM subjects remain a major focus, with many students taking on Differential Equations, Electricity and Magnetism, and Calculus III. Computer science courses, such as Intro to Programming with Python, Intermediate Java, and AWS Machine Learning, are also popular courses that seem to have a growing interest. Physics and engineering courses, including Intro to Mechanics and Intro to Engineering, complement this focus, offering hands-on and theoretical insights into foundational concepts.
However, there are still many planned courses in the more creative fields. With courses like Painting II, Beginning Digital Photography, Survey of Entertainment Design, and Digital Illustration 1, there is also a lot of interest and desire to learn how to express ideas visually. Meanwhile, classes such as Public Speaking, Mass Media and Society, and Live Streaming and Broadcast provide opportunities to hone communication skills and explore the art of storytelling in various formats.
The intersection of health and society is a key theme for many. Classes like Contemporary Health Issues and Women’s Health Issues explore the challenges of health care and its societal impacts. These courses encourage students to think critically about public health, equity, and community well-being.
Language studies are also popular, with courses like Spanish II. While this is a graduation requirement some are also going above and beyond and taking courses such as Principles of American Sign Language I. Additionally, global awareness is fostered through offerings such as Introduction to International Relations and World History.
This semester’s course selection reflects a mix of intellectual curiosity, skill-building, and a desire to engage with the world creatively and critically. Whether delving into social justice, mastering advanced STEM classes, or expressing themselves through art, students seem to be making the most of their academic journey at Ohlone!
