The Witherly Heights Yearender: Person of 2018

Which person–whether politician, celebrity, athlete, etc.–was the most influential of 2017?  Witherly Heights has gathered your choice for person of the year.

Picking one person to define the year is such a big task, so I’ve split it into categories. Beto O’Rourke was a huge standout politician and has shown how American politics are shifting. As for celebrity, this has undoubtedly been the year of Ariana Grande, with her monumental album and singles that have broken countless records. My favorite athlete of the year has been Chloe Kim during the winter Olympics–a huge reminder to me that I’ve done nothing with my life lol.

Kanye West was very influential in 2018. His political views were opposed by many, but he still progressed with them even after constant hate. He had his own opinions and stuck with them. The music star, along with releasing two albums and the hit song “I Love It,” also became very prosperous with his YEEZY fashion brand. He has released a number of shoes and clothing pieces throughout the year, only gaining popularity, despite his political views.

Like him or not, the answer is Trump. Our president is constantly mentioned by movie stars, rappers, politicians…pretty much everyone has been affected by his presidency.

For me, there were so many progressive leaders that emerged in 2018 including Beto O’Rourke who I think will be among the front leaders to run for president. Chloe Kim was another very influential person, especially to me. She was so amazing during the Olympics and really illustrated what the power of young people can look like, a large theme in 2018.
