The Witherly Heights Yearender: Favorite Movie of 2020

2020 felt like a real life horror movie, so these films have been a much-needed escape to a different universe. In honor of the year coming to a closed we have asked Alsion students to share some of their favorite movies they have discovered over the year.

“I’m Thinking of Ending Things is an interesting movie. I also enjoyed Little Women; I absolutely loved the book and thought that the movie really captured the warmth of the writing. Also Timothée Chalamet.”

“I don’t remember anything new that came out this year but I watched Kiki’s Delivery Service for the first time this year and it was great. I don’t think that counts though lol”

Eurovision Song Contest and Sonic the Hedgehog. I don’t mean that ironically, either. I really liked both of those movies. They were fun to watch.”

Rowan Tuttle

“I guess Onwards because that’s the only movie I can think of that I watched this year that came out later than 1971”

Jayden Cammarata

Tenet

Anya Patri

Uncut Gems

Dmitry Pleshkov

Vampires Vs. The Bronx

Nitya Sharma

Just Mercy

Ms. Jennifer Schriber

“I have several favorite movies considering that that’s all I have been doing for the past 9 months. Little Women did come out December 2019, but I have watched that movie more times than I would like to admit. The 13th, directed by Ava DuVernay, was also a very educational documentary exploring the history of racial inequality in the US.”

Diana Barbacioru

“My soul was blessed by my discovery of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. As I watched through the elegantly framed scenes, I was overcome with a childlike joy. The movie appeals directly to my sense of humor and explores themes of discovering self worth. It also helps that the movie is about a band in toronto and the journey of one of their band members to defeat an evil organization of ex-boyfriends of his girlfriend. The star-studded cast and so many other things about it made the perfect escape from the never-ending apocalyptic-esque feel of 2020–If I was cast again for the disaster of a film that is 2020, I would definitely pass…”
