The Mobile Tastes of Mobile Gamers
In several of my past articles, I’ve investigated the habits of Alsion students when it comes to playing video games. However, none of those articles focused on the mobile games people play. To fix this oversight, I recently sent out a survey asking people for the names of a few mobile games they like as well as which of these was their favorite mobile game of all. Here are the results.

Alsion players have a great appreciation for the classics. Many of the mobile games we play are classic games that haven’t become any less fun in the years since they came out.
Angry Birds– physics-based precision puzzle game about launching birds at pigs with a catapault (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Bloons Tower Defense Battles– A PvP tower defense game
Clash of Clans– A game about building up a medeival city, and also sending armies to destroy your friends’ bases (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Fruit Ninja– reactions-based arcade game about chopping vegetables
Geometry Dash– rhythm-based platformer game (title image; one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Jetpack Joyride– Arcade game about dodging lasers and missiles with a jetpack and other creative implements of transportation technology
Plants Vs. Zombies (1&2)– The tower defense game that popularized the TD genre
Subway Surfers– A game about running along train tracks and dodging trains
Temple Run- A game about running along temple corridors and dodging pits and tree roots
In addition, many of us have started to play the much newer hit games that weren’t around when we were young children.
Brawl Stars– multiplayer top-down arena shooter from the creators of Clash Royale
Clash Royale– Fun and unique deck builder that’s unfortunately notorious for its predatory marketing tactics (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Cookie Run Kingdom– Action role-playing game about sentient pastries
Genshin Impact– Extremely popular RPG (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Honkai Star Rail– Similarly popular RPG from the same creators as Genshin Impact (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Alsionites don’t only play popular games, though. Many of us have happened across much less well known games that we enjoy– this category is distinguished from the previous one by the entirely fact-based and objective measure of “have I heard people talking about them or not”.
The Archers 2- Precision physics-based strategy game
Bleentoro– Puzzle game inspired by optimization puzzles like Factorio
Enyo– Roguelike very similar to a simpler version of Into the Breach
Figure Fantasy– Idle game with strategy/RPG elements
Project Sekai: Colorful Stage– Rhythm game featuring Hatsune Miku
Punishing: Gray Raven– Post-apocalyptic action RPG
Reverse: 1999– Turn-based RPG with time travel
Slice and Dice– Masterful turn-based roguelike in which characters are represented by upgradable dice (one person’s first-favorite mobile game)
Soul Knight– Fast-paced top-down action roguelike
4=10– simple and meditative math puzzle game
Lastly, many of the mobile games Alsionites play aren’t really mobile– instead, they’re adaptations of computer/console games made for a phone. I didn’t know mobile versions of many of these games even existed– I wouldn’t be surprised if a mobile adaptation of Dark Souls existed!
Cod Warzone– gritty first person shooter
Dead Cells– Brutal action roguelike
Diablo Immortal– Triple-A MMORPG
Fifa Mobile– Football (European) simulator
Little Nightmares– Atmospheric horror game
Madden Mobile– Football (American) simulator
Stardew Valley– Tranquil farming simulator
Sudoku– Classic number puzzle game
