With a diverse selection of different styles of music, some songs of the 2019 summer are impossible to forget. This mix is the final farewell to the sunny, stress-free season.
“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X
“Old Town Road” topped the charts for much of the summer, although it was released in December of 2018. This mixture of hip hop and country became so popular, that “Old Town Road” is the only song to be No. 1 for a whopping 17 weeks on Billboard Hot 100’s. The song’s popularity led to remix after remix, featuring artists like Billy Ray Cyrus and RM of BTS.
“Lava” by Still Woozy
“Lava” maintains a dreamy, surreal quality reminiscent of the most serene moments of summer. This cheerful song is perfect to soothe nerves with the calming lyrics of a love song.
“Beautiful People” by Ed Sheeran and Khalid
Album: No.6 Collaborations Project
“Beautiful People” takes a cynical perspective, exploring the destructive side of life as a prominent figure in society. The song focuses on being true to yourself even when surrounded by a different lifestyle. This song combines catchy verses and an underlying message to make an impact on listeners.
“Good as Hell” by Lizzo
EP: Coconut Oil
This anthem of empowerment began Lizzo’s rise to fame and preached self-love. This song exudes confidence, with lyrics about reclaiming individuality and being happy with who you are.
“If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes
This hit single pairs catchy beats and upbeat melodies with an expressive voice. An effervescent chorus obscures a sense of longing, making “If I Can’t Have You” a perfect feel-good song for a summer day.
“Checkmate” by Conan Gray
With an appealing melody and an upbeat chorus, “Checkmate” is about having enough with being used and played. A sudden sense of silence at the end of the chorus keeps the listener on their toes and excited to find out what comes next.
“Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish
Album: WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
This catchy hit song combined an intense bass, a chorus filled with synths, and whispery vocals to bring out a creepier side of summer. “Bad Guy” overtook “Old Town Road” on Billboard Hot 100’s to finally take the No. 1 spot, making Eilish the first artist born in the 21st Century to have a song at No. 1.
“I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber
Album: No.6 Collaborations Project
Another hit from Ed Sheeran’s No.6 Collaborations project, “I Don’t Care” pulls together a variety of listeners with a peppy beat and chorus. Two contrasting voices and styles bring out fun summer vibes, especially with the goofy music video.
