Seminal Celebrations
We are often more thankful for holidays like Veterans Day and Labor Day because they provide us a much needed break from school, but these federal holidays exist for a reason (Labor Day for the working people of our country and Veterans Day for the military veterans). In the spirit of much needed, but often unobserved, holidays, we asked you what new national holiday you would like to exist and why. Here are your responses.
“Women’s Suffrage Day celebrating the day women got the right to vote.”
-Rhiannon
“Native American Day is already celebrated on the fourth Friday in September (in CA) but I think it should be a National Holiday to celebrate Native culture which is underrepresented. This holiday could also honor the Native American lives unjustly lost and bring awareness to discrimination that still exists against them.”
-Anusha
“National Immigrants Day. Take place sometime during the summer. Celebrate the diversity in American and honor those who have changed our country for the better.”
-Ayush
“Instead of February 29th, we add a 32nd day to October and have Halloween Pt. 2”
-Nicole
“A day that celebrates all things Disney.”
-Izak
“Save The Earth Day–On actual Earth Day itself to promote eco-friendly activities and celebrate the Earth.”
-Avani
“I think Veteran’s Day should be honored by combining it with Election Day. But to create something entirely new I’d give everyone the day off for the start of baseball season… or the Monday after the Super Bowl.”
-Bradley
“Dog Day, a multi-day holiday in honor of dogs, which takes place every January first through December 29th.”
-Jayden
“Sleep Day; August 10; it would celebrate sleep.”
-Michelle H.
“Living Creatures Justice Day! It would take place right before Earth day. It would honor the living organisms around us and make more people aware about the injustices of industrial farming.”
-Duronto Pablo
“January 19-25th. Coronavirus Outbreak 2020 week. Celebrating the lives of people who died due to the Coronavirus.”
-Armaan
