Alsion’s class of 2028 recently completed a project where they each picked a topic they were passionate about, researched a source related to that topic and created a slideshow. They explained how these issues impacted many victims and how these sources brought to light the suffering that many overlooked.

The Negative Impacts of AI on Art – Ariana:

Context: As artificial intelligence rises in creative fields, the world of art is undergoing a major conflict. Daniela Postolachi, a student at the Technical University of Moldova who is a digital artist, looks at both the drawbacks and the benefits of AI within the art community. AI lets artists’ work be taken without consent and makes human imperfection seem wrong or foolish. Job opportunities can also be lost to AI and damage humans’ natural creativity. On the flip side, AI can increase creativity and provide examples and insights on how to further improve art.

Purpose: The purpose is to examine the impact of artificial intelligence on art by exploring its ethical implications, challenges, and limitations, while emphasizing the continued importance of human creativity and the need to support and protect real artists.

Call to Action: We have to support real artists, protect creative jobs, prevent skill mismatches, and ensure that human expression remains central in art. Technology should continue to rely on and amplify human creativity rather than erase it.

Girls Restricted From Education in Afghanistan – Aria:

Context: The presentation focuses on the Taliban’s return to power and their renewed restrictions on girls’ education, especially the sudden decision on March 23, 2022, to close girls’ schools after promising to reopen them. This reversal caused deep emotional trauma, with images of crying girls being turned away from schools spreading worldwide.

Purpose: The purpose is to show the real results of these education bans on Afghan girls and their families. It aims to raise awareness of the harm caused by denying girls their right to education.

Call to Action: The call to action encourages the global community to break its silence and take meaningful steps to support Afghan girls and women. It calls for international pressure on the Taliban and stronger global efforts to protect education as a basic human right.

Gun Violence on School Campuses – Lily:

Context: Many states in the U.S. started allowing guns to be carried on campuses. As national debate intensified, there seemed to be two sides of the argument. Supporters of the law argued that carrying guns on campus would increase personal safety while opponents raised concerns about student mental health, impulsivity, alcohol use, and overall danger of guns on campus.

Purpose: The overall purpose is to examine the impact of firearms on school campuses and to inform policymakers, administrators, and even the general public on whether policy should favour or restrict guns on campuses.

Call to Action: The main message states that allowing guns on college campuses poses greater risk than benefit and is backed by research and public-health evidence. Allowing guns on college campuses does not make students safer and may actually increase the risk of gun violence (suicide, accidental shootings, and impulsive behavior among young adults). It is important to pressure policymakers to reconsider allowing guns on campuses due to the overwhelming evidence of the harm they may cause and instead restrict guns on campuses.

Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen – Jasmin:

Context: On March 26, 2015, Saudi Arabia, with the support of the U.S, launched airstrikes in order to restore Yemen’s government. Northern Yemen had been taken over by Houthi rebels, who were backed by Iran. This conflict led to a blockade which restricted food, fuel, and medical aid to civilians and forced them to suffer from famine, displacement, and collapsing healthcare. The humanitarian crisis persists in Yemen today, more than a decade later, but global awareness and aid still remain limited.

Purpose: The main purpose of this article is to inform readers about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen that continues to worsen as days pass. It aims to raise awareness of the human cost of war and blockade through humanizing statistics through real Yemeni experiences. The article also encourages international leaders to prioritize humanitarian aid over military action.

Call to action: The people of Yemen have been forced to survive in an unlivable situation for decades. It is important to try and raise global awareness and attention to pressure policymakers to fight the humanitarian crisis and help Yemenis.

Covid ‘Hate Crimes’ Against Asian Americans on Rise – Haasi:

Context: Since the rise of Anti-Asian Hate crimes in the U.S during the pandemic, former President Joe Biden had signed a law that aimed to prevent any more racial discrimination against Asians. This bill was meant for more local governments to take initiative and improve their information management system.

Purpose: The purpose of this is to explain how racism and xenophobia against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders need to be addressed. It is also to promote unity as a method of battling xenophobia in communities. Lastly, this article aims to convince government officials to take action against this issue.

Call to Action: The AAPI community has faced so much verbal and physical assault for a majority of their lives and that needs to be put to a stop. This can only happen if people unite and fight against this issue as well as the government needs to step in and put continuous effort in hopes of granting peace and safety to the AAPI community.
