New Year. New Semester. New Playlist
By: Avani Sethi
We’re at the beginning of yet another spring semester–the last semester of the school year. 2022 has only yet begun but so many new songs have been released and many olders songs continue to be bops.
Here’s a list of the Alsion Student Body’s favorite songs of 2022 so far and some of the reasons that they love them:
- “Feels Like Summer” by Childish Gambino
“The song is very vibey if you know what I mean and it makes me look forward to summer.”
- “Older” by Alec Benjamin
“Older is a song by my favorite artist Alec Benjamin which was made for graduates to describe their huge transition from HS to college.”
- “Scarlet” by BELARO
“Scarlet kind of has country music vibes mixed with pop (reminds me of Taylor Swift songs a little?”
- “GLOW” by CORSAK ft Robinson
“GLOW is a slow song with really nice music”
- “Oops(I’m Sorry)” by Lost Kings
- “Numb Little Bug” by Em Beihold
“This song describes the singer’s depression and how it manifests in ways unlike those commonly dramatized in media. Because of this, they struggle with a feeling of otherness and the idea they’re over reacting! It’s a very different description of depression than most others I’ve seen or heard, so it resonates with me a lot!”
- “Boy” by King Gnu
“Wasn’t released in 2022, but just found it recently and it’s good. I don’t know, I just like it. I kinda imagine that it has this image of the adolescent adventure.”
- “Taunt” by Lovejoy
“A good song to get you going in the morning when you really don’t want to go to math.”
- “Baby I’m Yours” by the Arctic Monkeys
- “Dream Boy” by Waterparks
“It’s a song about fan expectations and the dangers of obsession with artists, but it also makes me want to dance and jump around a bit.”
- “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift
“Yes…I listen to some Taylor Swift now. Especially the new album. For some reason I’m discovering her music from a few years back now. I really like this particular song since it’s got a really good tune and acoustic guitar power chord background, and the lyrics are cool.
- “Telegraph Road” by Dire Straits
“This is an older song which I’ve listened to for a long time, but this year I was able to experiment with actually playing and remixing it. Probably the best thing is the 7-minute instrumental riff at the end, between lead guitar and keyboard.”
- “I’m Tired” by Labrinth
“This song plays at the end of Euphoria season 2 episode 4 and has yet to actually be released as far as I know, but without spoilers it accompanies and narrates a big peak in a character’s development, mirroring a scene in season 1! Labrinth’s music has always been very impactful to me (along with the show) and they once again killed!”
- “Jigsaw” by Conan Gray
“I’m a BIG, BIG Conan Gray fan so I was really excited when he recently released a new song just a couple weeks ago. He describes the feeling of an unrequited crush and feeling like you aren’t enough for that relationship, as well as trying to change yourself to be what that other person would want you to be.”
- “I’m Sorry, Tokyo” by Brooke Alex
“Personally I really felt like I could connect to this song as someone who wishes they were closer to their asian roots. I can’t fluently speak or write my mother tongue and I really wish I had spent more time as a child trying to because when you get older its much harder and difficult to get back into.”
- “The Heart” by Clark Aboud
“Theme of the fight against the Corrupt Heart, the final boss of Slay the Spire. An intense orchestral tune, very similar to previous songs from the soundtrack, but raised to a higher power; I’d recommend listening to The Guardian Emerges and//or The Awakened One first to hear what previous bosses sound like. The song itself is fairly slow, but it is nonetheless one of the most epic songs I’ve heard. It features a very strong two-beat series in several places, especially the beginning, as if you’re listening to the Beat of Death of the boss in-game.”
- “Who Are You” by Wilcox
“I found this song a couple days ago on tik tok and its just like a really soothing Krnb song—perfect for when you want a calm, quiet, cute song to vibe to.”
