Ella Boh is a Costa Rican and French rising alternative rock artist from Laguna Beach, CA. She has made music since 2018 and has collaborated with popular artists such as Ari Abdul and Ellise. Boh has previously released an album, and her newest EP, Blurry, was released on April 24, 2026. This EP focuses on different parts of her mentality, and she describes Blurry as “five different sides of being a human,” in an Onestowatch interview. Each song in the EP describes these characters: Insomniac, Serial Killer, Lloronita, Starlet, and Bloody Mary. In this article, I will share my interpretation of these songs and what these characters represent.
In this story, Ella Boh is just a character; she plays all the different parts of her mind in the music videos, yet they all depict a different side of her. Because of this, I’ll refer to the speaker as the protagonist, who can take on these different characters.
- SERiAL KiLLER

Serial Killer is the final song of Boh’s Milk and Honey EP storyline and is the start of the different personalities from Ella Boh. This song represents the protagonist’s growing obsession with her lover, Ari Abdul, and also the creation of this identity. Boh’s other songs from Milk & Honey represent this shift; from songs like “babydoll” to “DiE,” Ella Boh illustrates this transition from liking someone to becoming obsessed with them. This progression is also expressed through the music videos and illustrates the protagonist’s conflicting emotions of innocence and guilt.
Below is the progression of each song (the order confirmed by Ella Boh) and different lyrics that illustrate the protagonist’s change in feelings that create the first character, Serial Killer.
babydoll: “Maybe I’ll let you have me / I’ma fall hard and fast”
ur gf: “Don’t you know your girlfriend is in love with me?”
- As depicted in the music video, Ari Abdul’s character is dating Charlie Besso, “the Boyfriend.” “ur gf” depicts the protagonist’s extent and desire to be with Ari, even if it means getting rid of competition from other lovers. This is illustrated in the bleeding out music video, where Charlie Besso’s character is confirmed as dead as the video shifts from bright pink imagery to black and white colors. The protagonist also obtains the wings he wears in “I don’t wanna.”
i don’t wanna: “ I want an excuse to end up with you”
a little bit: “I’ve got an altar in my head / Where you’re livin’ with no rent,” and “A little bit, a little bit obsessed with you”
- This is the start of Serial Killer’s growth; there is a shift in emotions, and the protagonist becomes more immersed in the relationship in a devoted way.
bleeding out: “You know me better than I know myself”
out of order: “I’ve got a confession, you’re my religion / I’ve got an obsession, divine premonition”
milk & honey: “It’s like I would give anything / Just to be your everything”
No fair: “Got an obsession and it won’t go away”
DiE: “ I want all of you / I gotta lock it down for life”
- This song features Ellise, whose character helps the protagonist understand the other side of her personality. The protagonist faces doubt and fear after killing Ellise’s character in the music video and feels a sense of urgency to escape this side of themself.
Lastly, Serial Killer is born when the protagonist walks into the fire at the end of the music video. This is when the protagonist’s innocent version succumbs to this personality and is overtaken by passion and their desire to be loved. The lyrics “I’ll make you mine, for forever like a / Serial killer, like a serial killer” depict the acceptance, wanting control, and the struggle of excessively desiring someone.
- iNSOMNiAC

Ella Boh in the Onestowatch interview describes iNSOMNiAC as “how I don’t feel like a real person most of the time,” and this song explores dissociation and the struggle to feel human. The protagonist, unable to sleep, is kept up by this guilt and darkness, as represented through the black wings they wear in the MV. “You made me your / Insomniac” highlights this realization, as the protagonist is haunted by this corrupted version of themself (insomniac), a version of their identity the protagonist must face whether real or not. The song lyrics “Silent but I’m screaming” also depict this internal struggle, illustrating how the speaker cannot escape this hallucination and therefore must accept it as their weakness, but also a part of their identity, as in “I can’t sleep with or without you.”
Also, in iNSOMNiAC, there is a distinction between the protagonist’s body and mental state, and the protagonist often takes different poses, like looking up and towards a shadow (what I perceive as the physical embodiment of insomniac). This illustrates this disconnection but also the struggle to understand reality from the “reverie.”
- LLORONiTA

Lloronita stands for little crybaby in Spanish, and this song reflects the protagonist’s desire to be loved and accepted. It also expresses how they are willing to endure pain and suffering as long as they’re still loved, as depicted in “I don’t care if it hurts” and “You scare me / You could kill me.” Lloronita also represents the feeling of abandonment and wanting to find comfort in love even if it means emotionally breaking down. The song also illustrates the feeling of being betrayed, and the words “Cry baby” are used as accusations that shape the protagonist into Lloronita, someone malleable and easily affected by others’ words.
With this, imagery is also an important factor of Lloronita’s character. The music video starts off with thunder and lightning, followed by rain. I’ll go over thunder and lightning later, as it is a repeating pattern in Blurry and is a part of the other characters. Rain symbolizes Lloronita’s weeping and resembles her pain through love. The song also repeats “I’ll cry you a river,” and this represents the emotional turmoil the protagonist has gone through to understand her self-worth. Similarly, Lloronita is also characterized by the image of an eye with tears, and supports these lyrics, “Can you see it in my eyes?” illustrating the physical pain that the protagonist faces through this character. The protagonist struggles to gain acceptance and love through their pain, and because of this, they cannot seek the validation of their emotions and are drowned in their sorrow.
- STARLET

There are two different perspectives of Starlet, and these are depicted in the Lloronita and Starlet music videos. Firstly, Starlet is the protagonist’s desire to be seen and heard by others, and is inspired by Ella Boh’s mindset when she was younger. She thinks, “I need to be famous so I can choose who to ignore.” Because of this, Starlet wants to be the center of attention and gain power to control those around the protagonist and influence them.
In the Lloronita music video, as mentioned before, the thunder and lightning refer to Starlet, symbolizing the protagonist’s sudden outbursts and desire to be valued over the other characters, overshadowing the rain (Lloronita) and iNSOMNiAC’s darkness. Starlet is seen as a silhouette in a box. And even though Starlet is only a silhouette, this character still gathers attention, drawing it away from Lloronita’s desire to be valued. These two characters create a dynamic that focuses on attention, one for status and power, the other for understanding and attachment. Starlet and Lloronita are opposites and compete for attention.
So why is Starlet in a box? The enclosure represents Starlet’s distance from those who shunned her and her power to isolate themself in a position of power. Also, this contrasts Lloronita’s expressive nature and illustrates how Starlet must be perfect and intentional. Lyrics like “The burning sun you can’t escape” and “A bleedin’ void inside your brain” illustrate how Starlet’s emotional emptiness is overpowered by her passion to be great. To me, this creates an image of a black hole, where light cannot escape her darkness and ruthlessness. This also ties back to Lloronita, where “You could be a black hole / And swallow, digest me,” highlights Lloronita’s compliance over Starlet’s absolute control.
The second portrayal of Starlet is seen through the protagonist, who receives attention from Ella Boh’s listeners and lives life as this perfected version of themself. The lyrics “I’m gonna be everything / I’m gonna be everywhere / I’m gonna be everyone all at once,” demonstrate this desire to be acknowledged but also living life in the present, free from emotional ties. Because of this, the protagonist views this life in black and white, drained but free from conflicting emotions. In the protagonist’s world, different colors represent these characters: Serial Killer is represented through red, Insomniac with blue, Lloronita with pink, Starlet with purple, and Bloody Mary with yellow. Without these colors, the protagonist has isolated themself from this internal struggle and instead focuses on being in a position of power where they are not held back from the other character’s desires.
- BLOODY MARY

Bloody Mary is derived from Ella Boh’s youth and how her family rejected who she was. Boh writes that “Looking in the mirror, I see her. I can’t run away from myself,” and this depicts her acceptance of her identity despite her past. The words “I see Bloody Mary” suggest that the protagonist sees this version of themself, someone who doesn’t need to change or be loved to be accepted.
The lyrics “Split my soul in two” refer to the conflict between wanting to be loved through change and being understood for who you are. Bloody Mary rejects Starlet and Lloronita’s transformation, and accepts the broken form of the protagonist, like how iNSOMNiAC cannot escape their shadow or how Serial Killer forms through acceptance of the protagonist’s actions. This is also seen through the verses “What’s it gonna take / To make you love me?” and Bloody Mary argues for acceptance without change or influence from others.
Because of these characters, the protagonist struggles with conflicting emotions and desires, creating an identity that is “Blurry” due to this separation. Also, the lowercase “i” in the song titles represents Ella Boh’s connection to these songs, demonstrating how these are real parts of her mentality and a part of her. Overall, Ella Boh’s Blurry EP depicts the struggle in understanding emotions. By creating these characters, Boh reminds listeners that they aren’t alone in their mental struggles and that their feelings are seen and validated.
