Traditionally, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has dominated College Football (CFB) but the past three National Championship winners have all been from the Big Ten conference. Which poses the question: Is the Big Ten finally better than the SEC?
CFB is made up of ten primary conferences, of which the Power 4 conferences are the SEC, the Big Ten, the Big 12, and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The SEC has been dominating CFB, with the past three National Championship winners being the University of Michigan, The Ohio State University (OSU), and the most recent champion, Indiana University, Bloomington (IU). All these teams are part of the Big Ten conference.
CFB has been a part of my life since the day I was born. My dad is an alumnus of the University of Southern California (USC) and a USC Trojans football fan, which is how I was introduced to CFB very early in my life. Because USC is part of the Pac-12, we followed the Pac-12 a lot more than the Big Ten. Now that USC is part of the Big Ten, we follow Big Ten football a lot more.
The SEC has been regarded as the best conference in all of CFB for almost 20 years. The universities of the SEC are predominantly in the Deep South. The original powerhouses of the SEC include the University of Alabama (UA), the University of Georgia (UGA), the University of Florida (UF), and the Louisiana State University (LSU). All of these schools have won the National Championship multiple times.
The universities of the Big Ten Conferences are in the Midwest and parts of the East Coast. Legendary programs include The Ohio State Buckeyes, the Michigan Wolverines, and the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) Nittany Lions. Fun fact, Rutgers University, another Big Ten school is highly regarded as the birthplace of CFB. All of these schools are also academically prestigious. According to ussportsscholarships.com, a huge benefit of going to a strong academic school is that it can help you learn lots of life skills like having a good work ethic, perseverance, and handling pressure. These qualities help not just in football but also in a work environment.
Ever since I started understanding football, the first difference I noticed is that the SEC, compared to the other conferences, has far more explosive plays throughout the game. A play is considered explosive when it gets more than 12 yards on a run play and over 20 yards on a pass play. The SEC is well known for its speed and explosiveness. One of the highest scoring CFB games ever was between two SEC teams which were the LSU Tigers and the Texas A&M University (TAMU) Aggies, where the final score was 74-72 in a seven overtime game. In 2021, the SEC did very well. UGA had an amazing defense, and UA quarterback Bryce Young had an incredible season, becoming the first UA quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy. UGA and UA made the National Championship, with UGA winning 33-18. In contrast, the worst year for the Big Ten in recent memory, excluding the shortened COVID season in 2020, was 2021. It was a bad year because only Michigan made the College Football Playoff (CFP) and got demolished by UGA 34-11 in the Orange Bowl.
Growing up in a Pac-12 household, every year on New Year’s day we would watch the Rose Bowl between the Pac-12 conference champion and the Big Ten conference champion. The one that I remember very well where USC beat Penn State in 2017. Unlike the SEC, which is known for its fast and explosive play, the Big Ten teams play the complete opposite way. They focus on running the football, strong offensive lines, long possessions on offense, and incredible defense. Their defenses are so good that the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Fighting Illini won 20-18 against the Penn State Nittany Lions in a nine-overtime game. What is interesting is that the past three National Championship winners have all been Big Ten schools, which poses the question: Has the Big Ten finally surpassed the SEC in CFB? If so, what changed?

In 2018, the transfer portal was introduced in CFB. The transfer portal gave players the option to request a transfer to a different school where they can make a bigger impact. In 2021, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) was introduced to CFB as well. This lets players get paid from advertising. Before NIL, if college athletes made money out of the deals they had, it would lead to a suspension, loss of eligibility, or expulsion. Coaches would also be faced with sanctions. In 2024, the Pac-12 conference dissolved due to poor leadership. Pac-12 powerhouses USC, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Washington (UW), and the University of Oregon joined the Big Ten. This increased their chances of more Big Ten teams making the CFP. That same year, Big 12 conference powerhouses, The University of Oklahoma (OU) and The University of Texas at Austin (UT) left the conference and joined the SEC. For the SEC, both its revenue and recruiting power increased.
In the CFP this season, there were five SEC teams and only three Big Ten teams. If you do the math, the SEC had a little over 41% chance to win the National Championship, and the Big Ten had 25% to win it. A SEC team didn’t even make it to the National Championship game this season, and only one made it to the semifinals. Indiana, a Big Ten team, won the National Championship. The runner-up was the University of Miami of the ACC.
Now going back to the main question, is the Big Ten finally better than the SEC? Based on the statistics, the answer is… Yes!
With the Pac-12 powerhouses joining the Big Ten, it has become more attractive to talented high school and college football players. Secondly, they’re strategically using the transfer portal and NIL to attract more talent as compared to the SEC. The Big Ten has also taken advantage of its strong academic reputation. This has brought players like the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. In contrast, the SEC is mostly known for its athletic reputation.
As a Big Ten fan and a follower of CFB, I’m excited to see that the Big Ten is finally the best conference in CFB. At this rate they’ll only get better. The Big Ten has built a system. I can’t wait for the season to start again and watch the Big Ten dominate!
