Haunting Hang-ups for Halloween

Halloween is upon us and that means it’s spooky season! Although trick or treating isn’t an option for most people this year, you can still get yourself in a scary mood by decorating your house or room. In this piece, we create two mini DIY’s that are perfect for the holiday. In fact, they are so easy, it’s almost like you can Do It Yourself.

Spooky Silhouettes

In a few simple steps, you can make these fun Halloween decorations which create spooky shadows from simplistic cutouts. These decorations are uncomplicated and cheap to make and can be used either outdoors or indoors, which makes them perfect for a fun and creative display on Halloween.

Materials:

  • Black construction paper
  • 1 pencil
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • Tape
  • String (optional)

Steps:

  1. Fold a piece of your construction paper in half.
  1. Use your pencil to draw a design on one half of the paper (it can be as simple or as complicated as you want).
  1. Use your scissors to cut through both sides of the paper.
  1. Unfold the cutout to reveal your design!
  1. You can hang these up either indoors or outdoors using tape and, if you have it, string.

Toilet paper bats

If you tried the previous DIY, you’re in luck, because the only additional supplies you need to make these adorable toilet paper bats are glue and a toilet paper roll. For those looking for a simple way to spice up their homes and get into the Halloween spirit, toilet paper bats are not only spooky but super easy to make, taking only about 5 minutes!

Supplies:

  • Toilet Paper roll
  • Black Construction Paper
  • White writing utensil (or white paper)
  • Any adhesive, glue or tape will work
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Secure a toilet paper roll and cut a triangular about halfway down the front
  1. Cover the inside and outside of the roll with black construction paper using your scissors to trace the roll and the adhesive to attach it.
  1. Draw a pair of bat wings on your excess construction paper and cut them out
  1. Attach the wings to the back of the toilet paper roll using your adhesive
  1. Use your white writing utensil to draw eyes and fangs on the front of the bat
  1. Show off your incredible DIY skills to everyone in your socially distant household!
